Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine knowledge, attitudes and practices among pediatric dentists regarding malocclusions and related conditions. This was a non-experimental cross-sectional study where an online survey was developed about the years of experience, number of specialties, workplace, occlusal and facial conditions evaluated, decision-making for referral to the orthodontist and final place of patient care. 82 specialists from nine countries answered to the instrument. In the results it was found that more than 98% of the participants affirm to evaluate habits, overbite, cross bites, and crowding; retrognathism was the least evaluated. Regarding the conditions of reference to the orthodontist, dental asymmetries and maxillo-mandibular alterations are referred by at least 78% of those surveyed. The place of treatment can be both, orthodontist and pediatric dentist’s office depending on the case. No differences were detected between the numbers of referred characteristics and years of experience. From this study can be concluded that pediatric dentists have proper knowledge, attitudes, and practices to assess malocclusion frequently; referring the cases that suggest high complexity. It is recommended increase communication between disciplines for comprehensive and in the right time.
