Abstract

Anchorage in orthodontics is about preventing unwanted tooth movement. To achieve better anchorage, temporary anchorage devices have emerged, including mini implants. The aim of this research is to describe the benefits of cone beam computed tomography for the positioning of temporary anchorage devices in orthodontics. A review of the literature was conducted. Searches were carried out in electronic databases in English, Spanish and Portuguese, taking into account publications from 2010 onwards. The literature refers that cone beam computed tomography allows better visualization of the placement of mini implants and, therefore, should be the imaging study of first choice.  In the upper jaw,  the most suggested location is between the first and second premolar, while in the lower jaw, depending on the therapeutic objective, it can be the area between the root of the lateral incisor and the root of the canine or in the region between the first and second mandibular molar. Cone beam computed tomography is a valuable resource for the positioning of temporary anchorage devices in orthodontics as it allows better planning of the ideal location of the device, thus minimizing the risk of failure and increasing the survival rate so that it can fulfil its therapeutic purpose.
